…There Shines a Light

Standard

there-comes-a-light

Wrapped in the shadow of death and sin, the world lay that night

But look! the darkness parts, and look! there shines a light,

A star, shining in the night, to sweep away the shadow’s time.

Where does it shine? A royal chamber? Nay, amidst a stable’s kine

In a manger, amid the straw, where ox and donkey lay and feed, King of kings, Lord of lords,

Neither courtier nor attendant stand about, there are no royal announcements or words.

None but father and mother, shepherds and sheep, and three men from a strange land

What kind of king is this? ask you; not a king to rule with a bedecked hand.

Nay, a humble King, in peasant’s garb, who will never sit in a lordly hall.

A King who rules no land, a King who lays down His life for all, Whose words shake the world

Wrapped in the shadow of death and sin, the world lay that night.

But look! the darkness parts, and look! there shines a light.

‘Twas the Night Before Christmas (A RETELLING)

twas-the-night-bfor-CHRISTMAS

‘Twas the night before Christmas,

when all through the house

creatures were stirring, roaches and rats.

The stockings weren’t hung by the chimney with care,

for they knew that St. Nicholas would never come there.

The children lay freezing on the floor

while visions of okra danced through their heads

And they heard him say as he flew out of sight,

“Sour¬†Christmas to all, and to all a bad night!”
